‘I will ask the Father to send you another Helper,
the Spirit of truth,
who will remain constantly with you.’
John 14:16 The Voice
We are continuing in our series on ‘Finding hope when it feels hopeless‘.
Today we are looking at a common current problem, as we go through a recession – ‘being out of work’.
Being out of work can be incredibly stressful, and affects so many things. Looking for a job can feel like it’s never ending. The longer you are out of work, the harder it becomes.
Thankfully, this time, we had past experience to hold on to; when my husband was made redundant from his previous job, and was out of work for a year.
It’s been a time of many emotions. As we wait for the next destination to be placed on our godly sat nav, we have sought the face of God; through worry, tears, and hurt, each time He has replaced these with His strength, peace and hope.
My husband is hurting. I sit by his side with my breaking heart, as I hate seeing him suffer; feeling rejected and unwanted as he steadily searches, applies, and prepares for each interview that he has been blessed with.
Each time God faithfully hears and answers our prayers, and closes the door, on what is not aligned to His will for our lives.
As we come together and seek the face of God, holding hands in prayer, asking God to help us through this difficult time, we are reminded constantly of the verse that He gave us, for our wedding –
‘By yourself you’re unprotected.
With a friend you can face the worst.
Can you round up a third?
A three-stranded rope isn’t easily snapped.’
Ecclesiastes 4:10-12 The Message
Jesus is our third strand
Through it all we must come to Jesus, when we feel like we are falling down the Alice in Wonderland tunnel, that seems like it has no end. As we focus on our hearts desire to be His light in the world, to help the broken and lost, we are reminded that this world is our temporary home.
‘The world does not recognize the Spirit of truth,
because it does not know the Spirit and is unable to receive Him.
But you do know the Spirit because He lives with you, and He will dwell in you.’
John 14:17 The Voice
As we seek to glorify our Heavenly Father, our security, our foundation comes from the Light of the World. As we wait for the judgement from the interview panel, for the phone to ring, we wait on the presence of the Holy One, to help us deal with whatever the outcome is – we cry ‘May Your Will be done’ deep within our hearts.
As we sit in stunned silence when the outcome isn’t as we would hope for, through all the emotions of disappointment, frustration, sadness…together we speak out the Word of God, and choose to trust in our Creator, the lover of our souls.
From the pit of darkness, the search party of Truth arrives, lighting our path, and blessing us with His ever ready help, as He reminds us of what our Saviour thinks of us, and sustains us through the storm.
‘I will never abandon you like orphans; I will return to be with you.’
John 14: 18 The Voice
When our minds are tempted to worry about how we will cover our bills, we are reminded of God’s grace –
‘God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.’
Philippians 4:19 NIV
When we are hurting, overwhelmed, confused, worried, Jesus calls us to remain still in His presence, and ask for God’s helper, the Holy Spirit, to minister to us at our deepest need.
As we praise the King of kings, His banner of love will cover us ( SoS 2:4).
‘Do not forget to rejoice, for hope is always just around the corner.
Hold up through the hard times that are coming, and devote yourselves to prayer.’
Romans 12:12 The Voice.
If you are struggling at the moment, looking for work, or just feeling hopeless in whatever situation you are going through, I invite you to call on the name of Jesus, and share how you feel with Him today. I pray that God will meet you at your deepest need.
Please join me in prayer:
We come before you and ask for your help.
Where many are out of work, and concerned for how they will cover their financial obligations, we stand in your promises that you will provide all that we need, from your glorious riches.
We kneel before You and ask for Your guidance, as we look for the jobs You want for us.
Our heart’s desire is for Your will to be done in our lives.
Open the door for us to go through, and close the doors that are not right for us.
Please strengthen us, when we are weary.
Please hold our hand when we are worried and don’t know what to do.
Help us Lord to remain steadfast on the Rock of Truth, may our identity reflect your grace.
When we feel overwhelmed, may our first call be to you.
We thank You that You are our hope when things look hopeless,
Thank You that You are with us every step of the way.
We wait on You and place our trust in You.
In Your name,
